Isabella Espinosa: Pioneering Sustainability In Fashion With Baobab

Isabella Espinosa
Founder & Creative Director

Women founders in Colombia are emerging as transformative figures across various industries. Their impact is particularly notable in sectors like technology, fashion, and social entrepreneurship. By challenging conventional norms and embracing innovative approaches, these women are not only advancing their fields but also redefining the landscape of Colombian entrepreneurship. Isabella Espinosa is a shining example of this movement. As the Founder and Creative Director of BAOBAB, Espinosa embodies the spirit of disruption and innovation. Her journey began with a solid foundation in law, which instilled in her a deep awareness of the need to challenge established norms. This critical thinking background proved invaluable in her subsequent transition to the fashion industry. Espinosa saw fashion not just as an aesthetic pursuit but as a powerful tool for change, capable of addressing social issues and driving positive transformation.

Espinosa’s approach to fashion is distinctly unconventional. By approaching the industry from an outsider's perspective, she brought a fresh viewpoint that has allowed her to question and redefine traditional practices. Her commitment to disrupting the status quo is evident in BAOBAB's unique offerings, which reflect a dedication to making a meaningful difference through innovative design and ethical practices. This perspective has positioned her as a game changer in the fashion world, demonstrating how creativity and critical thinking can converge to foster significant progress.

Isabella Espinosa’s work with BAOBAB is a testament to the impact women founders can have when they challenge norms and embrace new approaches. Her journey highlights how diverse experiences and perspectives can drive industry-wide change, inspiring others to follow suit and contribute to a more dynamic and inclusive entrepreneurial landscape. Let’s hear more from Isabella Espinosa.

Can you provide an overview of your professional background prior to founding BAOBAB? What key areas of expertise do you bring to the table as a business leader & entrepreneur in the fashion industry?

Before launching BAOBAB, I was still in college pursuing a law degree and had only worked as a teacher’s assistant. The process of building BAOBAB from scratch presented numerous challenges, which became invaluable learning experiences. These early obstacles helped me develop critical skills in problem-solving, resilience, and innovation—core principles that now drive our approach in the fashion industry.

What inspired you to establish BAOBAB, & what is the core vision behind the brand & its areas of specialization?

BAOBAB began as a concept and a narrative that evolved into a tangible product. I was driven by a simple yet profound question: how can we make a difference? Viewing the fashion industry from an outsider's perspective allowed me to envision alternative possibilities and challenge the status quo. My goal was to revolutionize the fashion industry by creating a zero-waste brand. BAOBAB’s mission is to make a global impact through collective action and foster creative communities focused on circularity. We provide deadstock textiles to designers and entrepreneurs, supporting their projects to convert waste into scalable businesses. In 2022, we launched the Cascade Challenge to tackle the pressing issue of waste in fashion. By sponsoring artists to transform waste into iconic pieces, we aim to create an ongoing narrative of sustainability and innovation.

Why was incorporating sustainability essential for BAOBAB, and how do you ensure sustainable practices throughout production?

Our sustainability mission, named Cascade, reflects our belief that waste is not truly waste if we can cascade it effectively. To support this, we have implemented a Zero Waste approach in our design process, ensuring that minimal waste is produced throughout our value chain. Any small remnants from the cutting process that cannot be used in our products are collected in our 'Textile Scraps Bank.' This resource is then made available to new artists and entrepreneurs, allowing them to repurpose these materials into their own creations.

Could you highlight the key responsibilities you undertake as the Founder & Creative Director of BAOBAB?

My primary responsibility is to ensure that BAOBAB remains at the forefront of innovation and shapes the future of fashion. Balancing my roles as CEO and Creative Director, I oversee the production department and manage our dedicated team of 68 employees as CEO.

"Our Sustainability Mission, Named Cascade, Reflects Our Belief That Waste Is Not Truly Waste If We Can Cascade It Effectively"

In my role as Creative Director, I focus on envisioning and directing our brand’s future path. This includes developing innovative activations, crafting compelling narratives for upcoming collections, and scouting strategic locations for new store openings. My aim is to enhance global brand awareness and maintain our position at the cutting edge of the industry.

This role involves not just generating bold ideas but also creating engaging stories that resonate with our audience, ensuring that BAOBAB continues to lead in both creativity and relevance.

What do you consider the major achievements of BAOBAB so far, & what is your vision for the brand’s future?

Among BAOBAB's most significant accomplishments are becoming the first Colombian brand to open a store in New York City, achieving global distribution with presence in over 50 countries, 450 boutiques, and 17 luxury department stores, and hosting the first-ever runway show in the Amazon rainforest. Additionally, our Cascade program successfully recycled 3 tons of waste in 2023.

Looking ahead, my vision for BAOBAB is to continue breaking new ground and setting industry standards. We plan to strengthen our direct distribution channel by opening strategically located flagship stores in the United States and Europe. These stores will serve as key touchpoints for our brand, enhancing customer experience and solidifying our market presence. By remaining committed to our core values of innovation, sustainability, and global reach, BAOBAB aims to lead and inspire, setting new trends and advancing toward a more sustainable future.
