In recent years, South Korea has seen a remarkable rise in women stepping into CEO roles, reflecting broader global trends of increasing female leadership. This shift reflects a growing recognition of women’s pivotal roles in shaping business landscapes and driving innovation. Among these trailblazers is Lisa Wong, the CEO of 360 Entertainment Korea.
Lisa Wong's journey is a testament to the impact of diverse cultural experiences. Born in Thailand to a Chinese-Filipino family and raised in the U.S., Wong's upbringing was marked by a rich tapestry of cultures and traditions. This multicultural background profoundly shaped her perspective and character. Encouraged by parents who valued both academic excellence and the arts, Wong explored a wide range of interests from a young age, including creative arts, music and entrepreneurship. This early exposure cultivated her creative thinking and ultimately guided her towards a successful career in entertainment.
Her career began as a marketing assistant in Seoul, which paved the way for her role at Discovery Networks in Singapore, overseeing APAC channels. Working across Thailand, South Korea, and Singapore broadened Wong’s horizons, allowing her to integrate diverse cultural and professional practices into her work. At 360 Entertainment Korea, Wong’s leadership reflects her commitment to social responsibility and creating positive societal impacts. Influenced by her father’s dedication to community service and her parents’ adaptability, Wong prioritizes empathy and excellence in her professional endeavors. Her diverse experiences and dedication to meaningful communication underscore her role as a prominent global leader in the entertainment industry. Let’s read on.
Introduce us to 360 Entertainment Korea. Throw some light on the key responsibilities you shoulder as the company’s CEO.
At 360 Entertainment Korea, we are more than just an entertainment company; we are pioneers in cultural fusion and artistic innovation. Based in Seoul, with partner offices in Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines, we provide a comprehensive media hub that bridges cultural boundaries and delivers exceptional projects for artists and brands. Our expertise includes international talent representation, global marketing, content development, event management, and production.
As CEO, I steer the company's strategic direction, aligning our vision with industry trends and market demands. My role involves developing and executing marketing strategies to elevate our artists and content, managing our brand image, and fostering relationships with key stakeholders, including partners, investors, and media. And, of course, I ensure our snack pantry is always stocked!
Throw some light on the major challenges you encounter in your current role? How do you overcome the said roadblocks?
As a global entertainment agency that bridges cultural borders, we encounter significant challenges, including navigating cultural sensitivities, managing diverse regional teams, and distinguishing ourselves in a highly competitive market. To address these, we implement strict cultural awareness protocols, ensuring all projects undergo thorough cultural vetting to prevent missteps, especially when working with international artists and brands.
"At 360 Entertainment Korea, We Are More Than Just An Entertainment Company; We Are Pioneers In Cultural Fusion & Artistic Innovation"
Our competitive edge lies in our deep cultural insights and extensive professional network, which allow us to deliver personalized and impactful services. By understanding various cultures and leveraging top-tier talent, we create unique and resonant work that stands out in a crowded industry.
Additionally, the rapid pace of technological evolution affects how we create and distribute content. We address this by embracing digital transformation and staying updated on the latest trends, ensuring our campaigns are both technologically advanced and culturally sensitive.
What do you consider to be the most significant achievements in your professional journey so far?
Reflecting on my professional journey, several significant achievements stand out. One of the most notable has been breaking through barriers to become a foreign female CEO in South Korea’s predominantly male entertainment industry. This milestone not only marks a personal victory but also highlights the potential for greater diversity and serves as a powerful statement in support of women in leadership.
Another key accomplishment has been leading high-profile international projects, such as pioneering cross-cultural initiatives that build strong connections between Korean and Southeast Asian artists. From the start, my vision was to unlock the vast, untapped talent in Southeast Asia. The region is rich with extraordinary artists whose creativity and passion are poised to shape the future of entertainment. By bridging cultures and fostering collaborations, we’re creating unique artistic expressions and paving the way for Southeast Asian artists to shine on the global stage. This journey is about more than just success—it’s about inspiring a movement and transforming the entertainment industry.
How do you define success as a business leader? What has been your success mantra over the years?
Success as a business leader, to me, hinges on two core principles: perseverance and purpose. I firmly believe that 'no' should never be taken as the final answer. Instead, every setback or rejection is a temporary hurdle, not a conclusive defeat. Maintaining a positive mindset and resilience in the face of challenges enables one to achieve even the most ambitious goals.
By blending perseverance with purpose, I strive not just for milestones or superficial success but to make a lasting, impactful contribution both personally and professionally. This approach ensures that every action I take is purposeful, helping me to navigate obstacles, seize opportunities, and create a meaningful path forward.
How do you envision the media landscape in Asia evolving in the future? What industry trends do you think will have the greatest impact?
The media landscape in Asia is poised for substantial transformation. The region is rapidly evolving, driven by technological innovations like AI, shifting consumer preferences, and a surge in untapped talent, particularly from Southeast Asia. Looking ahead, Southeast Asian talent will play a pivotal role in shaping the media future. Their unique cultural influences and distinctive artistic contributions will enrich the global entertainment industry, introducing fresh perspectives and diversity. This shift will not only broaden the scope of available content but also elevate Southeast Asia as a key player on the international stage, sparking a new era of innovation and cultural exchange.
We can expect increased collaborations between Southeast Asian artists and international counterparts, leading to cross-cultural productions that enhance the media landscape and foster global cultural exchange. These partnerships will blend diverse artistic styles and narratives, contributing to a more vibrant and dynamic media environment.
