She manages all aspects of the design studio and employs contractors for specialized areas, ensuring that her company operates sustainably and ethically. Could you describe the early years of your life and how you became interested in architecture?

My cultural background, including my French and Melanesian heritage from New Caledonia, influenced the way I perceived spaces and objects. Growing up, I was exposed to the contrast between the old world of France and the primitive culture of New Caledonia, where everything was built from scratch using natural materials. As a child, I enjoyed imagining and reinventing the spaces around me, building tree huts, and cliff huts, and even creating a village with my cousins on a coffee plantation. This imaginative approach to the world ultimately led me to pursue various forms of design, including art, architecture, product design, and furniture design.

Could you describe your previous experience as an architect and how it helped you become a better designer and business leader?

Early in my career, I worked for Gensler and Finkernagel Ross Architects in London. However, it was my athletic achievements that truly inspired me to become a better architect and business leader. I practiced martial arts and even became the New Zealand Kumite Karate Champion at the age of 17. I also engaged in other sports like skydiving, scuba diving, and more and through these experiences, I developed the discipline and mindset of an athlete, always striving to push myself to be the best.

Attending the Architectural Association in London provided me with another valuable opportunity to grow as a designer and business leader. I was fortunate to have met Zaha Hadid, who inspired me to pursue excellence in design, architecture, and business.

What inspired you to create LYZADIE DESIGN STUDIO and what makes it unique in the design industry?

LYZADIE DESIGN STUDIO was established because of my passion for ethical and conscious design. My goal is to fill the gaps in New Zealand's design industry, while promoting ethical and sustainable business practices, including supporting local makers and donating a percentage of sales. My personal values of health and sustainability have been integrated into the company's mission. These values are deeply important to me and have been a part of my personal life for over 30 years, so it was natural for me to incorporate them into the business. Ultimately, I want to create a positive impact on people and the planet.

Can you discuss your experience as an architect and designer and what inspires you in your work?

As an architect and designer, my inspiration comes from the site and materials when working on a building. I approach each project as if I were a child, visualizing the space in my head and then sketching it out. I love incorporating nature into the design and creating a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor spaces. Materials and light are also essential aspects of my design process. When it comes to creating furniture and objects, I draw inspiration from the land and culture of the country where I reside, which is currently New Zealand.

As an entrepreneur, what are some of the major challenges you face during a new design project, and how do you overcome them?

Challenges are always present, whether they come from external factors such as the Covid pandemic or internal factors such as losing a maker in the middle of a project or lacking sufficient funds. Overcoming these challenges requires a deep level of decision-making skills that enable you to pivot easily when needed. Maintaining a mindset that continuously seeks solutions to these challenges is crucial. As a woman, one of the most significant challenges I face is balancing the demands of running a successful business while also managing a family.

Could you describe some of the major accomplishments that you have experienced as an architect and designer? What is your vision ahead?

LYZADIE DESIGN STUDIO was established 6 years ago, and LYZADIE DESIGN, the architecture component, was established 18 years ago. The two entities are separate but related, with one being product-focused and the other being service-focused. These two parts of the business require different design approaches. My most significant achievements have been the global recognition and awards that I have received for my work in both design and business. Additionally, I feel that my ability to run two businesses while still spending quality time with my four children is a significant win.

My vision is to keep growing globally sustainably and have a shop in a few key cities in the world. I want to rebuild ‘the’ ideal team to help me grow globally. Right now I am gearing our resources towards Australasia.

What qualities do you possess that make you a successful leader? Can you share the principles or beliefs that have contributed to your success?

In my view, my leadership is characterized by the ability to cultivate a conducive atmosphere for people to reach their full potential and excel in their work. My mantras are, the better world starts with me, and Consider being the type of energy that adds value and beauty to the people you meet and places you visit’.
