Women leaders in Costa Rica are making significant strides across various industries, from business and real estate to government and social enterprises. These women are not only known for their professional achievements but also for their ability to influence change, foster innovation, and inspire others. With Costa Rica being a country that values sustainability, environmental protection, and community welfare, many women leaders are at the forefront of initiatives that promote these values, particularly in sectors like eco-tourism, conservation, and real estate.
One such inspiring figure is Mari Brenes, the owner of Palm Real Estate. As a proud Costa Rican, Mari grew up with a deep appreciation for the country’s natural beauty and the tight-knit community that defines its culture. Her career journey began with studies in hotel management, where she developed a strong understanding of customer service and the importance of creating memorable experiences for others. Mari’s first job in sales at Residence Club at the prestigious Four Seasons Peninsula Papagayo allowed her to further hone her skills in building relationships and assisting clients, setting the stage for her transition into real estate.
In 2006, Mari relocated from San José to Guanacaste, where she realized that this region, with its picturesque beach towns like Playas del Coco, Hermosa, Ocotal, Playa Panama, and Matapalo, was the perfect place to build her career. These areas, which she had visited as a child, became the focus of her real estate business. The proximity to Liberia International Airport and the breathtaking natural surroundings have made these locations not only dear to her but also central to the services offered by Palm Real Estate. Mari’s passion for the community and her connection to the land continue to drive her work, making her a prominent figure in Guanacaste Costa Rica’s real estate landscape.
Let’s dive into this one on one interaction to hear more from her.
Can you share your professional journey in the real estate industry and highlight your key areas of expertise within Costa Rica's real estate market?
My professional journey in real estate has been deeply rooted in the Guanacaste region, where I have specialized in the vibrant communities of Playas del Coco, Hermosa, Ocotal, Playa Panamá, and the Papagayo area. Known for its stunning beaches and one of the world’s highest concentrations of 5-star resorts, including neighbours like the Four Seasons, Ritz-Carlton, and Waldorf-Astoria, this area offers unparalleled opportunities for buyers and investors alike. My experience working with both foreign and local clients has provided me with an in-depth understanding of the Costa Rican market. I find great fulfilment in assisting people from all backgrounds in investing and enjoying the beauty of this country. Each client has a unique story and set of goals, and guiding them through such an important process is what makes my work so rewarding.

What led you to establish Palm Real Estate? Tell us about the underlying idea behind the venture and its key areas of expertise.
Palm Real Estate was founded in 2009, at a time when the market was facing a downturn. While some may have seen it as a bold or even risky move, I was 23, full of energy, and eager to embrace the challenge. From the outset, my vision was to build a company that offered more than just property transactions. I aimed to create a welcoming experience for every client, whether local or international, ensuring they felt informed and confident throughout the entire process.
Today, Palm Real Estate specializes in various types of properties, including vacation homes, permanent residences, commercial spaces, land, and rental income properties. Serving clients seeking a Costa Rican retreat, a long-term investment, or a fresh start with their families, Palm Real Estate has grown to focus on building meaningful relationships and helping people truly feel at home in Costa Rica.
As the leader of Palm Real Estate, what are your key roles and responsibilities? What is your vision for the company’s future?
My primary role as the founder of Palm Real Estate is to help clients make informed decisions. This includes connecting them with trusted professionals, such as attorneys, escrow agents, home inspectors, builders, and property managers, ensuring that every step of the process is smooth and stress-free.
My responsibilities extend beyond the transaction. I believe in staying connected with the clients long after the deal is closed. Building lasting friendships with clients is what makes my work truly special and rewarding. I envision a future where Palm Real Estate continues to grow while staying true to its core values of integrity, personalized service, and lifelong relationships.
In your view, what have been the most significant achievements in your professional journey? What is your success mantra as a leader?
My greatest achievements have not just been building a strong team but also building lasting relationships with clients who have become lifelong friends, as well as with colleagues in the industry. I am grateful for everyone who has contributed positively to my journey and to the success of my business.
My success mantra centres around trust and authenticity, working diligently to understand the clients’ needs, maintaining transparency, and ensuring they feel supported throughout every step of the process.
How do you envision Costa Rica’s business landscape evolving by 2025, and what role do women play in the country’s economic growth?
By 2025, I foresee Costa Rica’s business landscape continuing to grow and diversify, driven by an influx of people looking to retire, work remotely, or launch new businesses. The country’s commitment to sustainability will likely continue to attract those seeking a balanced, eco-conscious lifestyle. Women are playing an increasingly influential role in Costa Rica’s economic growth, making strides in leadership positions and contributing across various sectors. I am proud to be part of this movement, as more women step up to lead businesses, shape communities, and inspire future generations.
Advice for aspiring women leaders: Stay authentic to yourself and embrace opportunities to take risks. It’s your authenticity and commitment that will inspire others to work with you. Lead with passion, and success will naturally follow.
