The Power of Relationship

Leadership requires a deep understanding of the dynamics within the team. This understanding can be achieved through the art of relationship-building. An effective leader must embody qualities such as empathy, emotional intelligence, and strong communication skills. A woman leader who possesses these qualities is more likely to cultivate robust relationships with her team. With these relationships established, she can gain valuable insights into the individual needs of each team member. This, in turn, fosters a supportive work environment that significantly enhances productivity.

Leadership Through Empathy & Engagement

I assumed a leadership role in a unit where over 70% of the team members were women. At that time, the team struggled with productivity. I had to address issues with productivity, frequently dealt with mood swings, minor conflicts among team members, etc. To deal with these challenges, I dedicated time to understand both the professional needs of each team member and, to some extent, their personal needs as well. This was no small feat as it required significant effort.

I implemented small rewards, organized team lunches, and celebrated birthdays not just for our team members but also for the spouses of top performers. Additionally, I created a safe space for the team to share their challenging experiences on the job while encouraging a sense of camaraderie through humour and light-hearted teasing.

Advice for Aspiring Women Leaders

My advice to aspiring women leaders is simple: Leadership is not rocket science, nor is it reserved for a specific gender. I encourage you to be bold, embrace challenging responsibilities, and maintain a strong focus on your goals. Don’t forget to take a moment to look in the mirror and admire yourself, acknowledging your strengths and accepting your imperfections.
